The worst kept secret over the BTCC ‘silly season’ has been confirmed. West Surrey Racing BMW have announced that Aiden Moffat will join the team for the 2025 British Touring Car season.
Moffat, who finished in 13th place in the 2024 standings with the LKQ backed Speedworks Toyota team said: “It sounds like a cliché, but this really is a ‘dream come true’ moment for me in touring car racing. The chance to join the best team on the grid doesn’t happen often so it’s fantastic that everything’s lined up for 2025 and that we can go forwards together with the support of LKQ Euro Car Parts. Having seen from the outside how WSR operate, they just seem to do things the right way in every area and we’ve all seen how much success they’ve had as a result.”
After a year where Moffat bagged an early win at the opening Donington Park round, the season tailed off with the only other podium visit coming at the third round at Snetterton. The lower points positions were where Moffat would be found for most of the season with four failures to finish at the last three rounds finishing off a disappointing year.
Moffat is the third signing for the squad after the retention of reigning champion Jake Hill on the MB Motorsport side of the garage and Daryl DeLeon on the ‘WSR’ side. Moffat will be joined by a second LKQ driver.
Team owner Dick Bennetts stated: “We’re very pleased to welcome Aiden to WSR for 2025 as part of our LKQ Euro Car Parts BMW line-up. As one of the few current BTCC drivers to have won races in front-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive cars, he should adapt to the BMW quickly and be able to challenge for strong results everywhere. It’s also interesting that he had his best BTCC Championship result in a rear-wheel-drive car in 2021. We’ve seen what he’s capable of on the racetrack – including several impressive wins – over the years. Our job now is to give him a car that will allow him to get the best out of himself as often as possible.”
A return to a rear-wheel-drive car with strong teammates bodes well for Moffat. A successful season in 2021, alongside champion Ash Sutton, finished with his highest championship finish in eighth. A win along with a consistent series of competitive points finishes also saw a measured driving style that set well with the car, before the Q50 and Laser Tools team suffered terribly with the imposition of hybrid the following year. Moffat has struggled to regain the form in the FWD Honda and Toyota in the intervening years.
Moffat will be looking for wins in his first campaign in the BMW and also said: “I don’t think I’ve ever felt so excited or motivated for a new BTCC season and honestly I wish we could get on track right now!”
WSR have also been connected to Colin Turkington returning.
