MARK SMITH UPGRADES TO GEN TWO CUPRA FOR 2025 TCR UK SEASON

A step away from the Gen One Cup for 2025 is the challenge for Mark Smith in TCR UK this season as he ditches an older model Cupra Leon in favour of a newer Cupra Leon Competicion.

The former BTCC racer took two class win last season in the category for older cars and finished fourth in the Goodyear Diamond Trophy running with Ben Sharpe Racing.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to TCR UK after a brilliant year of racing in 2024. I had some great battles on track and felt I improved as a driver throughout the season. Teaming up with BSR again, along with continued help from my friend Mitch, will only make the move to the newer Gen 2 Cupra even better. I’d also like to thank Richmond Fire and Stripes and Graphics for their continued support – it means a lot to have them backing me again this year.”

Smith made his TCR UK debut in 2022 when he dipped his toes in the water for a couple of rounds. In 2023 he entered the final two meetings before stepping up full time for last season.

A final position of 13th overall in the standings in the aging Gen One Leon was a hard fought result. A number of overall top 10 finishes and Diamond Trophy and Gen One Cup podiums saw his trophy cabinet grow, but going full pelt with a Gen Two car will bring further challenges for 2025, and the aim will be to run a t the front for the Diamond Trophy.

Smith, who campaigned an Alfa Romeo 156 in the 2006 British Touring Car Championship season will remain with BSR for 2025 with team boss Ben Sharpe saying: “We’re really excited to have Mark back with us at BSR for the 2025 TCR UK season. Last year, we saw him grow throughout the series and take two class wins in the Gen 1 Cup, which was amazing. Now he’s stepping up with a Gen 2 Cupra, and we can’t wait to support him again and see what he can achieve this year. We’re also looking to run a second car in 2025, so it’s an exciting time for the team as we continue to grow and take on new challenges.”
