A further expansion for the destination of TCR cars racing in the UK has been agreed with the BRSCC and Maximum Motorsport authorising the use of Gen 1 machines in the new for 2025 Pro Sports Sprint Series.
The new series from BRSCC is intended for purpose-built race cars and opens its new campaign at Silverstone next month. The series is set to include both sportscar and Touring Car machinery.
The agreement comes alongside the sanctioning of Gen 1 cars to compete in the 750 Motor Club Roadsports and Club Enduro categories – which was announced in December.
The license comes in the wake of the decision by TCR Intellectual Property owners World Sports Consulting (WSC) to ‘blacklist’ TCR cars that run outside of sanctioned TCR events. The news that there would be an enforcement of the ruling came about late last year. The UK was hit with an announcement from WSC that meant at the time it would only allow cars to race within TCR UK itself, without voiding the homologation papers that are an important part of the worth of a car, should it be sold on for further TCR competition.
The addition of the 750 Motor Club to the TCR license system allows for Gen 1 cars to continue competing in the endurance events where TCR machines have tasted success for a number of years. The move also becomes appealing for a larger variation of Gen 1 cars, with the BRSCC competition allowing for Gen 1 cars to have a destination where sprint Touring Car style sprint races will be the order of the day.
BRSCC Chief Operating Officer Paul McErlean said: “We’re really pleased that we’ve been able to come to this agreement with Maximum Motorsport, and we look forward to hearing from TCR car owners and teams. Our new-for-2025 Pro Sports Sprint series is designed to cater for higher powered tin top machinery as well as factory-built race cars, and it gives a great opportunity for TCR cars to now join the grid.”
TCR UK promoter Stewart Lines commented: “With over 70 TCR cars in the UK, it’s clear that the TCR concept has grown since it arrived in 2018. This growing market provides UK competitors with the chance to drive a TCR Touring Car in both Sprint and Endurance formats. Today, we welcome the new sub-licence agreement with the BRSCC. Our aim is to work with all parties who own TCR cars to give them a legal platform to operate in and be a part of the TCR family moving forward. This new agreement is the next step in achieving this important goal.”
For the moment the only option for ‘second generation’ TCR cars to race in the UK without being blacklisted is within the TCR UK championship itself.
The stance from WSC is partially driven by a desire to see TCR cars continue to race with official certification with factory manufactured components, ensuring that the machines comply to the safety specifications that they – in conjunction with manufacturers – consider to be relevant to each individual machine.
The announcement of a series that could be open to running TCR cars for this season appears to have been a catalyst for WSC to enforce what they consider as a defensible posture to protect their IP, and to protect themselves from litigation in the event of an incident involving a TCR machine outside of sanctioned TCR events.
