BTCC 2025: WHY ONE MOTORSPORT TAKING TOCA ENGINES MAKES SENSE

One Motorsport have confirmed that they will return to the TOCA/M-Sport engine for their return to the BTCC this season.

The Brackley based outfit ran TOCA engines in 2021 and 2022 after their deal to use Neil Brown Honda engines expired at the close of the 2020 season. A year with the Swindon TOCA powerplant in ’21 was followed by a season with the current supplier M-Sport, with Josh Cook leading the squad to five victories across the year.

After a name change from BTC to One for 2023 the team shifted back to the Neil Brown engine along with a shift to cars owned by Dynamics. At this point it has not been officially confirmed whether the Dynamics owned Civic Type R chassis, or their own examples ran by the team from 2019 to 2022 will take to the track.

The choice of using the TOCA engine seems to be a logical choice. With the switch to 100% sustainable fuel, and an imminent engine development ban, using an engine that will have gone through extensive bench testing in preparation for the new regulations and fuel type with a long term future in the championship versus a bespoke single car engine that has been sidelined for a season would appear to be the reasoning behind the decision – along with the fact that One did not taste success across its only season with the Honda based unit.

Off-season testing should have allowed the engine manufacturers to understand theoretically how the new fuel will work. Un-Lmited were the only outfit to run the new fuel from Carless last season, and reported a trouble-free run as the drop-in petrol only required the team to change fuel lines for the TOCA engine that One will use. Un-Limited reported that none of the associated problems that other championships have experienced with sustainable fuel (spray pattern problems, engine overheating) were present.

Team owner Steve Dudman stated: “We’re looking forward to working with M-Sport this coming season; we feel that the use of the TOCA BTCC engine which has been developed further – along with the improvements we’ve made to the car using our original Honda chassis – gives us the best chance of success moving forward this season.

“There were a number of reasons as to why we feel the TOCA BTCC engine is the way to go, and it’s been a collaborative decision within the team to get to this point. So far the dialogue back and forth has been nothing but positive.

“We’re preparing to take collection of the engines soon and then it’ll be about integrating them into the updated cars ahead of testing. This is an exciting step for us as a team and we’re looking forward to finally hitting the track in the coming weeks.”

One will officially return to the track at the BTCC official test days at Croft on April 1st and 2nd.
