Touring Car Magazine unveils “Making a Racing Classic – The TOCA Touring Car Story”: A Documentary Celebrating the Iconic 1997 and 1998 PlayStation and PC Games.
Get ready to rev up your nostalgia with the release of “Making a Racing Classic – The TOCA Touring Car Story,” a documentary that dives into the creation of the groundbreaking first two TOCA Touring Car Championship games from 1997 and 1998. Featuring interviews with those who developed the games, viewers will get behind the wheel of a cultural phenomenon that brought the heart-pounding excitement of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) to living rooms worldwide.

“Making a Racing Classic – The TOCA Touring Car Story” explores the development of these beloved games, which set a new standard for console racing simulations with their immersive gameplay, and authentic BTCC atmosphere. The documentary features exclusive interviews with original developers who share untold stories of the creative and technical challenges they overcame to bring the TOCA experience to life. From pixelated tracks to roaring engines, the film reveals how an emergent giant in Codemasters captured the essence of one of motorsport’s most competitive eras.
The documentary will also be accompanied by a limited-edition book covering the development of the game and how the Super Touring period became a worldwide phenomenon.
Adding depth to the narrative, the documentary includes insights from BTCC drivers who raced in period, offering a firsthand perspective of the environment that led to the series growing to the point of being able to release its own stand-alone game. Current BTCC stars also weigh in, reflecting on the enduring legacy of TOCA and its influence on modern racing games and motorsport culture.
“This documentary is a love letter to fans of the TOCA games and the BTCC,” said Touring Car Magazine editor Mick Palmer, the man behind the film. “It’s a chance to celebrate a pivotal moment in gaming history. A time where a generation of BTCC fans suddenly grew oversized thumbs, and frustrated expletives were hauled at TV screens across the nation as a virtual Frank Biela or Jason Plato rammed your car into the Redgate gravel.”

“Making a Racing Classic – The TOCA Touring Car Story” began production in August 2024 and will be released to YouTube in October 2025 on the Touring Car Magazine YouTube channel. The film promises to deliver a nostalgic journey for gamers, racing enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the intersection of technology and motorsport in the late ‘90s.
